Autobiographical Narrative Essay

That one Saturday morning I  can remember my mom and dad announcing to my sister and I that we were going to Malaysia. My sister and I were in denial because we were so excited. My sister and I had never heard of the country nor where it was located in our huge world. I was about to hop on a plane and go to a completely foreign country and hope for the best. I immediately started packing my bags because we were leaving bright and early the next morning. I can remember packing and thinking to myself ” How far away is this place?” I also remember being a little freaked out about the flight because I had no idea how long it was going to take. At that very moment m sister asked my mom in that irritated voice”How long is the plane ride mom?” I will always remember my mom taking a deep breath and saying “Twenty-one hours.” My mom didn’t so excited anymore either because we knew that we were in for a long Sunday.

In the car that early next morning I remembered to keep my nind off that twenty-one hour flight by blasting my ipod and drinking a smoothie. As we approached the airport I was just excited to get to Malaysia without sitting forever. When we eventually made it onto the enormous three isle plane we quickly realized that we were the only Americans on the flight. The rest of the flight was nothing buy Japanese because our first stop was Tokyo, Japan. Personally when I noticed that I got even more excited because that is just a taste of what Malaysia was going to be like. On top of my excitement like I said I was a little bit worried knowing that we were going to be flying over pretty much nothing but the huge Pacific Ocean! When I look back I think I was just being a little wimp because I was used to flying over the ocean. During the flight I put all that beside me and tried to look forward to the breathtaking experience I was about to have!

I can’t even describe the excitement that was running through me when we touched down in Singapore, Malaysia. It was a big sight of relief to my family and I because were all over sitting on our butts. That first day was brutal, getting used to crazy humidity and the sixteen hour time difference that led to insane jet lag. The city itself was so amazing because of course how green it was but also how clean and wealth it was. When I saw the signs that said no spitting, no littering, it made America look like a dumpster. It took a few days to get used to all the different cultures and bizarre foods that they ate. It took me back to America because now a days we have food courts that have different types of foods and thats just what they had. I thought it was cool to think of America knowing that I was thousands of miles from home.

After our crazy stay in Singapore we flew to Kuching, Borneo. This city was like night and day compared to Singapore as far as poverty, Muslim population, and the Malay culture. The people in Kuching were much more laid back and just chilled. It was amazing because the way of life there was totally relied on the ocean. No factories, no delivery trucks, just a bunch of fish markets. The families there reminded me of those on the survival shows because it seemed like all they had was a fish net but thats all they really needed and they were happy. The reason whey we flew to Kuching was because of the beautiful scenery and outrageous jungles. Thinking back on our trip I would have to say that my favorite part was the jungle hike that we took. I really enjoyed walking through the jungle listening to the rain drops falling from leaf to leaf as they make their way to the moss ground. I also enjoyed the white faced monkeys jumping from tree to tree as they yelp as if they were being murdered. Beside the indescribable jungle I was really inspired by the Muslim culture because it taught me that not everyone dressed in hoods and scarfs are bad people. They also inspired me to experience different cultures and cultures and religions other than ours. While in Kuching we met an awesome family of four that live in Malaysia. It was bizarre because they had kids the exact age that my sister and I were so we got along well. I was amazed on what the kids didn’t have a tv or ipod and things like that but they still managed to be happy Mayla kids. It was cool because they taught us the local games they played, such as a game called cricket which was very hard. After spending a fed days hanging out with them we unfortunately had to say goodbye. I must say that was the worst part of the trip leaving our friends and this amazing country full of life and incredible cultures.

I find myself looking back at this wonderful experience in Malaysia. Coming back from there I am much more grateful for the things I have in life and I learned not to ever be stereotypical again because one group doesn’t make up the whole country and religion. The importance that I go our of this experience was that I learned a lot about different people.
